Trendy Vs. Timeless: Selecting Pieces that Compliment Your Style
Trendy Vs. Timeless: Selecting Pieces that Compliment Your Style
Guest Blog Post by Sarah Harris of Adiamor
Keeping up with fashion trends can be like keeping up with your relationships: fleeting, outdated, but exciting when they happen. It can sometimes be difficult to keep up with every item that hits your local mall; especially when by the time you get there, those cute oversized bangles are already out of style.
You may be asking yourself how to keep your jewelry fresh while avoiding overly trendy looks. And you are terrified of looking like that fifty-something mom who is wearing her teenage daughter’s clothing and has her nose pierced. It’s about time you gave yourself some accessory rules to follow to create a lasting, modern jewelry collection. Maybe a few discreet trendy purchases won’t hurt. Set a limit on how much you are willing to spend on a trendy item. Creating a rule for yourself that you won’t spend more than ten to fifteen percent of your accessory budget on trends will be very beneficial to you. This will help you limit the amount of jewelry that goes out of style while allowing you to invest in timeless pieces, like a brooch, or gold cuff.
Try your best never to pay full price for items that go out of style in weeks. Look for coupons, or two for one deals that will help keep costs at a minimum. Create a separate fund for items that require saving. This will be for the diamonds and tennis bracelets that will last you a lifetime. Deciding if an item has lasting qualities can be difficult to manage, especially when under the influence of girlfriends, discounts, or irrationality. First and foremost, consider the material. Classic materials like pearls, or gold are always smart choices. Unusual materials like plastic, or cheap metals tend to go out of style very quickly. Next, consider how you would categorize the piece of jewelry. If words like boho, or mod come to your head, these items are most likely too trendy. It is important to consider how certain jewelry appears on your body type.
Although every fashionista in Hollywood may be sporting several strands of different necklaces, this may not look the best on your particular body. An extreme when it comes to jewelry, whether in excess, or non-existent generally does not withstand the test of time. Try considering a more balanced approach to a trend. Classic variations on an item can help you enjoy a trend while not going overboard. Choose one strand of pearls that flatters your neck line instead of buying several that overdoes the look. Remember, you are the best at determining what looks best for your body, life style, and personal tastes. Even if your best friend, or sales associate is pushing a certain piece on you, don’t buy jewelry you don’t even like. This can be the biggest mistake when purchasing jewelry. You want to be able to look and feel your best when wearing an item. Buying an accessory you know you wont wear just ends up being a waste of money. If you need a moment to yourself, just take a seat and relax. There is always the option of putting something on hold before you purchase something your not entirely sure about. There will always be more jewelry.
The smartest way to begin building your classy jewelry collection is to buy timeless pieces and to accessorize them with trendy items. Trendy accessories like jewelry, shoes, and belts can be a cheaper approach to giving your outfit a hint of what’s current. This will give your classic pieces, like your vintage watch, a fresh approach to new trends without going over your budget.
